Thoughts of self harm and suicidal ideation common during menopause

New research has revealed the high prevalence of mental health symptoms in perimenopausal and menopausal women. Newson Research asked 1,212 women who were coming to their clinic for the first time to record their mood and mental health symptoms and found:

• 98% of patients were affected by mental health symptoms

• 83% had little interest or pleasure in doing things

• 1 in 6 indicated that they had thoughts of self-harm or suicidal ideation

The prevalence of such severe mental health symptoms highlights the high prevalence of significant mental health symptoms in perimenopausal and menopausal women. There is still a substantial gap in support, education and treatment (including hormone treatment) for perimenopausal and menopausal women with mental health symptoms.

The poster detailing the research was presented at the European Menopause and Andropause Society (EMAS) Congress in Valencia, Spain, this month, and can be downloaded.
