New research has shown that testosterone-based hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can be beneficial for treating negative mood symptoms, and effective in managing pain symptoms in perimenopausal and menopausal women.
Newson Research presented two posters at the ISSWSH/ISSM 2025 conference detailing the findings of the research, including:
- Overall, 39% of women were able to reduce or discontinue their antidepressant medication after starting HRT
- Higher discontinuation rates were seen in women who had HRT with testosterone, compared to those who had standard HRT
- Women using testosterone alongside standard HRT discontinued their opioid medicaton at nearly double the rate of those prescribed standard HRT alone
- Among women taking painkillers, 62.1% of women reduced or discontinued use after starting HRT.
